Clémence: 3 roles, 1 journey

What is your current role?
Since February 2025, I have been a Customer Support and FAE Technician. I manage interfaces between Asia, Europe, and the United States. I handle data reports (e-data), shipping parameters, and customer inquiries.

What was your background before joining Soitec?
I started my career in analytical laboratories after earning a degree in chemistry. I knew nothing at all about the semiconductor industry before a former colleague who had joined Soitec told me about it. At that time, I was thinking about buying my first apartment, and my position didn't allow me to do so. So, I applied for an open position at Soitec without knowing what I was getting into... and I was recruited. I’ve never left since!

How was your arrival at Soitec?
I joined Soitec as a process technician in the implant department on the production side. I immediately liked the shift work rhythm for the freedom and free time it offers. After three years in that role, I wanted to change scope and joined the MTBE (Metrology, Test, Back-End) department. At Soitec, career paths are not fixed, which is what I particularly like.

What did this first change of position bring you?
In this new team, I found a real collective dynamic and a management style I felt aligned with. In MTBE, we manage the incoming and outgoing of wafers, line metrology, packaging, and shipping. It was a very comprehensive role on both technical and operational levels. Over time, I became one of the most senior members of the team, eventually training newcomers. Feeling comfortable in your skills and having a reference role is very rewarding.

What motivated you to change paths after that?
After several years of shift work, I needed to switch to daytime hours for my two children. However, I didn't want to choose a position "by default." When an opportunity arose in customer support, I applied directly. The challenge was significant: the position required a good level of English and a high degree of autonomy. During the interview, I was honest about my language gaps, but my motivation made the difference.

How do you evaluate this change?
Customer support is a role behind the scenes, but it is crucial for ensuring wafers arrive at their destination with the correct information. I had to step out of my comfort zone, learn to manage my own schedule, and improve my English. I benefited from Soitec's support through English lessons, which allowed me to progress. Moving from a highly structured cleanroom environment to a position where I am the master of my own organization was a real springboard: I gained autonomy, responsibility, and self-confidence. I feel more legitimate in asserting myself on certain topics to move them forward. This gain in confidence is my greatest professional victory.

What would you advise someone who is hesitant to change paths?
Would I do internal mobility again? Without hesitation. Change can be scary, especially when you are happy in your team, but it is a true asset. Soitec offers the chance to reinvent yourself and grow in your career without leaving the company. My motto: "Forget that you have no chance and go for it." If you are offered an opportunity, it’s because someone believes in your potential. My journey has taught me one essential thing: sometimes you start from zero, but never from nothing.
