Interview with Samy Zahri, V.I.E currently based in Singapore

What has your V.I.E experience in Singapore brought you — both professionally and personally?

My V.I.E experience in Singapore is proving to be an incredibly rich chapter of my life both professionally and personally. On the professional side, it's a constant learning curve. I'm applying my expertise in a completely new environment, with a different legal framework, business culture, and industry context. This challenges me to grow faster, stay agile, and adapt daily.

What truly makes this experience special is the people, especially in Singapore, a city known for its vibrant expat community. I’ve met talented and passionate expats from all over the world, each bringing their own strengths and perspectives. I’ve also been lucky to work alongside Singaporeans who are incredibly welcoming, globally minded, and open to collaboration. Their efficiency, discipline, and forward-thinking mindset make them truly inspiring teammates.

Being based here also gives me the opportunity to explore Southeast Asia, a region full of contrasts, colors, and energy. From spontaneous weekend getaways to discovering new cultures, cuisines, and perspectives, I’m constantly reminded how much there is to learn beyond what I’ve known so far. Living here is both a professional challenge and a personal adventure and I'm growing from both every day.

How does your mission contribute to Soitec’s development in Singapore and in the region?

As the very first Singapore-based employee dedicated to export control, I play a key role in raising awareness about this critical topic, a subject I’m passionate about, and one that is especially relevant given today’s global landscape and its significant impact on the semiconductor industry.

I also contribute to Soitec’s growth by ensuring full compliance with local legal requirements in my field of expertise. To do so, I’ve developed and implemented processes tailored to the Singapore entity, building on the solid and comprehensive framework already established by our French headquarters. The specific context and operations in Singapore also bring valuable insights that help strengthen our global export control practices.

What has been your biggest challenge since starting your V.I.E — and how did you overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges is raising awareness around export control, a topic that, while deeply relevant to our operations due to the sensitive technologies we use, is sometimes perceived as secondary or purely supportive. It’s understandable as the core mission of producing wafers is at the heart of everything we do. Still, given our highly globalized environment with international suppliers and customers, complying with export regulations is absolutely essential to protect and sustain our business.

I’m working to overcome this challenge through a mix of flexibility, patience, and by building trust over time. What truly makes the difference is the incredible curiosity, openness, and willingness to engage that I consistently encounter among my colleagues, qualities that create the ideal foundation for meaningful collaboration.

Strong support from management has also played a key role, reinforcing the importance of export control across teams and giving me the means to implement meaningful and lasting practices.

If you had to sum up your V.I.E adventure in Singapore with one word or expression, what would it be — and why?

“Flourishing in a World of Diversity”

Singapore brings together diverse cultures and perspectives, helping me grow. Living here allows me to explore the region, making this journey a blend of professional growth and personal discovery.
