Interview with Olivier Sery, Industrial computer engineer

My name is Olivier Sery, and I work at Soitec within the IT team, in the CIM group (Computer-Integrated Manufacturing).

My background
I have an engineering degree in industrial mathematics, which I obtained after studying in Grenoble. After several professional experiences in Toulouse in the aerospace sector, I returned to the Grenoble area. I then worked for over ten years at ARaymond, where I was responsible for the development of the MES (Manufacturing Execution System — the equivalent of PROMIS at Soitec). Later, I wanted to move closer to my home in the Grésivaudan valley.

IT in service of production
I have been working at Soitec for two and a half years within the CIM department. We are in charge of all the software used in production: PROMIS, OCS, automations, SPC, etc.
My role is to manage the configuration of parts in PROMIS, the production tracking software that controls everything happening in the cleanroom. I also work with related applications, so my work is essential to ensure traceability and smooth production.
What I particularly enjoy about my role is working in collaboration with almost all the departments around production. Since PROMIS is omnipresent in the cleanroom, it's very rewarding.

Voluntary supervision, a useful lever in my professional life
I am also an instructor at FOC Ski, a ski club that offers recreational and competitive skiing for children aged 5 to 15 every winter. Every Wednesday and Saturday, we take them to the Collet d'Allevard to teach them how to ski. The club operates in partnership with several municipalities, which allows us to offer affordable prices for lessons, ski passes, and transportation.
I started simply by accompanying my children. Then, seeing that the club needed volunteers, I decided to take the federal instructor training. Today, I supervise Saturday morning sessions. All the instructors are volunteers, which allows nearly 200 children to put on skis every year. We often follow them for several seasons, from the "ourson" level to the "étoile d'or."
From a personal perspective, this commitment brings me pedagogy and patience. Teaching children is a real exercise, and it also helps me in my daily work, especially when I need to explain things, listen, or interact with different profiles, whether they are parents or colleagues.
The most rewarding moment is always the end of the season when the children pass their stars with the ESF (French Ski School). Watching them succeed, progress, and knowing that we contributed to it is truly gratifying.

Another side of my personality
Few people know, but outside of work and my volunteer activities, I am an amateur musician, and I play the bass. I also play volleyball at the Crolles club.
