Interview with Maréva Gauss, V.I.E currently based in Singapore

What has your V.I.E experience in Singapore brought you - both professionally and personally?

My V.I.E experience in Singapore has been a key chapter in my development. Personally, it helped me mature, become more independent, and adapt to a new culture and environment. I gained a broader perspective and greater confidence in unfamiliar situations.

Professionally, it accelerated my growth. I took on real responsibilities, worked in a multicultural team, and learned to be more proactive and solution-oriented. It sharpened my communication skills and strengthened my ability to navigate challenges in a dynamic, international setting.

How does your mission contribute to Soitec’s development in Singapore and in the region?

My mission focuses on strengthening Soitec’s cybersecurity capabilities in Singapore - a critical topic  given the growing global concern around cyber threats worldwide. By adapting and aligning our local cybersecurity practices with global standards established in France, I contribute g to ensure consistency, resilience, and trust across regions. This foundation not only protects our operations but also supports Soitec’s ambitions h in Asia where trust, reliability, and strong governance are key enablers of sustainable growth

What has been your biggest challenge since starting your V.I.E — and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge was opening up to new people and adapting to a different culture. Moving to a new country meant stepping out of my comfort zone, both socially and culturally. I had to learn to be more open-minded, listen actively, and understand different ways of working and communicating. Over time, by being curious, respectful, and making an effort to connect with others, I built strong relationships and became more comfortable in this diverse environment.

If you had to sum up your V.I.E adventure in Singapore with one word or expression, what would it be — and why?

I’d go with the Singlish expression “ownself can.” It perfectly sums up my V.I.E journey, being independent, learning to handle challenges on my own, and stepping up in a new environment. Whether it was adapting to a new culture, building professional relationships, or taking responsibility at work, I realized that with the right mindset, ownself really can handle it.
